Learn about financial aid policies at UMGC.

U.S. Department of Education regulations require the disclosure of general information to help students and families make better-informed decisions about higher education. This page acts as a guide to sources of consumer information, University of Maryland Global Campus policies, and disclosures related to financial aid as required under the Higher Education Opportunity Act and other legislation.

Additional descriptions of available Federal, state, institutional, and outside sources of assistance, eligibility criteria, methods of disbursement, terms and conditions of loans, and employment opportunities are available in the costs and aid and financial aid sections of the UMGC website. Additional consumer disclosure information can be found in the consumer disclosures and policies section of the UMGC website.

Financial Aid Forms and Procedures

All students wishing to receive Federal or state funds must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students may be asked to submit documentation such as tax returns, birth certificates, citizenship information, Social Security cards, and/or other items needed to verify financial or dependency status.

Students who do not wish to submit requested documentation will not receive a financial aid award. Students who have a completed file—meaning all requested documents have been submitted to UMGC's Office of Financial Aid (OFA)—are considered for financial aid.

The FAFSA is available online and requires use of a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). OFA does not have any paper versions of the FAFSA. If you need a paper application, please contact the Department of Education directly at 800-4-FED-AID. If you are hearing-impaired and need assistance, contact the Department of Education TTY line at 800-730-8913. On your application, please include UMGC's school code: 011644.

UMGC does not require an additional application other than the FAFSA to apply for Federal or state student financial aid. However, students who want to apply for a UMGC scholarship need to complete a separate scholarship application.

Certain OFA forms must be accessed through the to-do list in your MyUMGC account. The remainder are available for download from our forms web page.

FAFSA Verification

UMGC must verify the information provided by students, parents, legal guardians, and/or spouses on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA). The Department of Education requires that UMGC adhere to Federal guidelines for reviewing financial aid applications. Some student applications are selected by the Department of Education for verification. Universities also have the option of selecting students for verification.

If selected for verification, you will be required to submit additional documentation to UMGC. UMGC's Office of Financial Aid (OFA) will notify you via e-mail to log in to your MyUMGC account. Additionally, OFA will update your to-do list in your MyUMGC account with the requirements. Your MyUMGC account will describe, in real time, any information requested by UMGC Financial Aid.

After you submit documents for review, your account may display conflicting information. If this occurs, OFA will reach out to you to resolve the conflicting information by requesting additional documentation.

For more information on FAFSA verification, please review UMGC's complete FAFSA verification policy and watch Financial Aid TV.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment, was created to protect the privacy of students. FERPA affords students certain rights with respect to their educational records, including, but not limited to,

  • The right to inspect and review their records

  • The right to request changes to information the student believes to be inaccurate or misleading

  • The right to consent to disclosure of personally identifiable information

  • The right to prevent disclosure of directory information

  • The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning FERPA violations

Visit FERPA for detailed information about these rights.

Methods of Providing Consumer Information

UMGC Financial Aid provides information through various channels, including publications such as the university's financial aid brochure, website, MyUMGC, e-mails, and catalogs (electronic and print). UMGC Financial Aid e-mails a variety of important information to students via their primary e-mail addresses; we use e-mail as the primary means for contacting students. UMGC Financial Aid uses MyUMGC and this website to notify students of any targeted or general announcements. Students can find other consumer information topics in consumer disclosures.
