Business Core Courses

Complete a specially designed set of core courses for business-related bachelor’s degree programs at UMGC.

Effective for the catalog year beginning in fall 2025, University of Maryland Global Campus requires you to take a series of required business core courses if you are in one of seven specific business-related bachelor’s degree programs. These courses allow you to develop knowledge and expertise in a breadth of critical business- and management-related topic areas, including economics, information systems, statistics, business writing, marketing, accounting, data, AI, business law, operations, and more.

Why Take Business Core Courses?

While building your expertise and skills in these career-focused areas, you will also be making the most of your degree and elective requirements. Depending on the bachelor’s degree program you are in, the business core courses will total 39–42 credits. All of the credits in the required business core fulfill either general education requirements or bachelor’s degree-level elective requirements, helping you get the most out of your academic journey.

The following bachelor’s degree programs include a set of business core courses as a required part of the curriculum. Be sure to review each program page for the specific requirements:

Depending on the bachelor’s degree program, the business core courses will total 39–42 credits. All of the credits in the required business core fulfill either general education requirements or bachelor’s degree-level elective requirements. Here is a complete list of the business core curriculum:

These two courses fulfill all 6 credits for the general education behavioral and social sciences requirement:

  • (3 Credits, ECON 201)
  • (3 Credits, ECON 203)

This course fulfills 3 of the 7 required credits for the general education research and computing literacy requirement:

  • (3 Credits, IFSM 300)
    • If you’re in the Human Resource Management program, you must take an alternative course to fulfill this requirement: (3 Credits, IFSM 305)

This course fulfills all 3 credits for the general education mathematics requirement:

  • (3 Credits, STAT 200)

This course fulfills 3 of the 12 required credits for the general education communication requirement:

  • (3 Credits, WRTG 112)

Depending on the program, these courses fulfill 24–27 credits of bachelor’s degree elective requirements:

  • (3 Credits, ACCT 301)
    • If you’re in the Accounting or Finance programs, you must take an alternative course to fulfill this requirement: (3 Credits, ACCT 220)
  • (3 Credits, BMGT 110)
    • If you’re in the Accounting program, you do not take this course
  • (3 Credits, BMGT 240)
  • (3 Credits, BMGT 250)
  • (3 Credits, BMGT 364)
  • (3 Credits, BMGT 380)
  • (3 Credits, FINC 331)
    • If you’re in the Accounting or Finance programs, you must take an alternative course to fulfill this requirement: (3 Credits, FINC 330)
  • (3 Credits, MRKT 210)
  • (3 Credits, OPMG 300)
