With an online bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from University of Maryland Global Campus, you can help find solutions to global issues such as the SARS-COV-2 virus (COVID-19), food insecurity, and bioremediation. This program combines laboratory skills and applied coursework with a biotechnology internship experience and upper-level study. The curriculum, designed with input from employers, industry experts, and scholars, can prepare you for a career in multiple fields including pharmaceuticals, biomedical research, and more.

Required Major Courses: 36 Credits

Of the 36 credits of coursework required in the major, 15 lower-level credits must be transferred in. Please see Program Admission Requirements for more information.

  • (3 Credits, BIOL 350)
  • (3 Credits, BIOL 357)
  • (3 Credits, NSCI 301)
  • (6 Credits, BIOL 486B) or two (3 Credits, BIOL 486A) courses
    You must take this Workplace Learning course concurrently with a new internship or work project related to your academic program. Prior program approval is required.
  • (3 Credits, BIOL 495)

Take the following courses (please note that some courses may be required to be taken outside of UMGC prior to your enrollment in the program):

  • (4 Credits, BIOL 230); taken at UMGC or accepted as transfer credit
  • General genetics with genetics laboratory (4 credits); taken outside of UMGC and accepted as transfer credit
  • Biotechnology applications and techniques with laboratory (7 credits), taken outside of UMGC and accepted as transfer credit
    • These 7 credits may be chosen from the following academic areas: biotechnology, biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, physics, and virology

Additional Program Information

  • For this program, you are required to have already gained technical and scientific knowledge of biotechnology through coursework and direct experience in the field; contact an advisor to confirm your eligibility.
  • Coursework does not have to be completed prior to admission, but it must be completed prior to graduation; transfer coursework must include general microbiology with a microbiology lab (4 credits), general genetics with a genetics lab (4 credits), and biotechnology applications and techniques with a lab (7 credits) chosen from the specific subject areas outlined in the Required Major Courses section.
  • To pursue a major in biotechnology, you must have completed the required lower-level coursework for the biotechnology major—within an Associate of Applied Science degree program at a community college with which UMGC has an articulation agreement, within another appropriate transfer program, or at UMGC (if available); consult an advisor before electing this major.
  • We recommend a strong background in biology, chemistry, and math; an understanding of molecular biological techniques; and strong written and verbal communication skills.
