A History Serving Our Troops

On October 2, 1949, seven professors departed the United States for Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt, Germany, charged with bringing higher education to military overseas after World War II. That fall, more than 1,800 enrollments were recorded across six education centers in Germany, and UMGC had begun a dedication to our students overseas that continues today.

Over the next several decades, our professors brought college classes to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Ethiopia, Libya, Pakistan, Spain, France, England, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond. They taught in places like barracks, bunkers, mess halls, and libraries.

Today, more than 3,800 UMGC faculty members continue to serve in our 170+ worldwide locations. Many not only have advanced degrees but also extensive hands-on experience in the fields they teach.

We actually had faculty there in Iraq with our troops, probably wearing helmets and flak vests.
