Veterans Initiatives Office (VIO) Scholarships

Eligible military-affiliated students can earn a $1,000 scholarship at UMGC.

Military-affiliated students who are currently enrolled stateside—or at our Europe or Asia locations—may be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Veterans Initiatives Office (VIO) at University of Maryland Global Campus.

Each year, the VIO awards a total of six scholarships. In addition to meeting the eligibility requirements listed below, students who wish to be considered must be involved in at least one of UMGC's student organizations listed under Eligibility Criteria.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a VIO scholarship, you must

  • Be currently enrolled at UMGC
  • Have completed a minimum of 6 credits at UMGC
  • Be a member of at least one of the following:
    • The One2One mentorship program, as a mentor, for at least six consecutive months
    • The Vessey Veterans Resource Center's virtual student union, as an active contributor, for at least six months
    • The SALUTE National Honor Society - UMGC Chapter
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Scholarship Details

The VIO will distribute a total of six scholarships during an academic year. Three will be distributed in the fall term, while the remaining three will be distributed in the spring term.

If you are chosen for a scholarship, you will be contacted via email by the Veterans Initiatives Office. The total amount of the scholarship ($1,000) will be deposited into your UMGC student account.

 

How to Apply

The application for this scholarship is currently open. For reference, the scholarship application is open during the following dates:

  • Spring: January 15–February 17
  • Fall: August 15–September 10

Please note: The scholarship application includes a 250-word essay, so prepare accordingly. This year’s essay prompt is: How does the nation need the help of its veteran population? In what ways are veterans best positioned to influence and improve society?
