According to Forbes, 94 percent of companies in a recent study found that skills-based hires outperformed those hired only for their degree. In other words, organizations aren’t just looking for a degree on a resume, but instead are looking for evidence the job candidate has actionable skills they are ready to apply in a new role on day one.

At University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), we are dedicated to bridging the gap between academic credentials and employee needs to help you prosper in your career. We reached out to just a few of our more than 322,000 alumni to ask how the skills they gained while they completed a program at UMGC benefited them in their careers.

How Does UMGC Prepare Students with Business Skills for the Workplace?

Business programs at UMGC are designed to build career-focused, highly applicable skills so students can succeed in a variety of industries. Students prepare for leadership roles and learn how to make data driven decisions while utilizing the latest technologies.

Christ-Love Massong Belombe-Esomo

Christ-Love Massong Belombe-Esomo graduated from UMGC in 2025 with a bachelor’s in human resource management. In the program, she focused on leadership and management, learning how to manage teams, lead projects, and navigate organizational dynamics effectively. She also gained a solid foundation in financial management, including budgeting, financial analysis, and understanding financial statements, which are crucial skills for HR professionals.

“In my UMGC program, I developed several essential business and career-relevant skills tailored to the field of HR management. I honed my strategic thinking abilities, learned how to analyze complex situations, and developed effective HR strategies,” said Belombe-Esomo. “Additionally, I improved my communication skills, both written and verbal, through various presentations, reports, and group projects. These skills are vital for HR professionals who need to interact with employees, managers, and external stakeholders.”

One big topic covered in UMGC’s business programs is how to use artificial intelligence (AI) to provide value, a skill many employers are prioritizing. Ronnette Meyers, who earned a bachelor’s in business administration and management, gained AI skills that she could apply right away.  

“A specific skill that I learned in information systems was the integration of AI into my workplace,” said Meyers. “How can I make my business more proficient and streamline some of our processes? And I learned that through my information systems course and then in my accounting course, which was phenomenal.”

Rachel Elise Adams, who earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2025, expressed how the program prepared her to take on leadership roles with confidence, equipping her with the tools to thrive in an ever-evolving business landscape.

“The MBA program at UMGC provided me with a well-rounded skillset that has strengthened my professional capabilities in meaningful ways,” said Adams. “I honed my strategic thinking, enabling me to approach challenges with a long-term perspective and make informed decisions. Leadership development came through hands-on case studies and group projects, teaching me how to motivate teams, manage diverse perspectives, and navigate organizational complexities.”

Additionally, Adams’s research skills expanded as they learned to analyze industry trends and apply real-world insights to business challenges.

What Skills Can You Gain with a Degree in Cybersecurity or IT?

As the cybersecurity and information technology (IT) industry continues to grow, so does the need for trained cyber professionals. UMGC helps students gain the latest industry knowledge and real-world expertise that can help them specialize in their chosen field.

Melanie Alexis Coombs earned her bachelor’s in management information systems, which helped them develop strong business and technology skills that are directly applicable to her career.

“Some of the key skills I acquired include database management, IT project management, business process improvement, strategic decision-making and leadership while gaining a deeper understanding of cybersecurity, data analytics, business intelligence, enterprise solutions, and agile methodologies,” said Coombs.

Moubarak Akamou, who earned a master’s cloud computing systems, worked specifically with cloud-based systems in his program that he can directly apply to his career.

“Through the UMGC program, I developed key skills in cloud architecture, cybersecurity, and DevOps,” said Akamou. “I gained hands-on experience with AWS and Azure, learned how to design scalable cloud solutions, and strengthened my project management and collaboration abilities; skills that are directly relevant to modern IT and business environments.”

UMGC’s programs are continually updated and designed with input from industry leaders. In addition, many UMGC cybersecurity faculty members are working professionals in the field, providing students with direct relevant information and trends in their fields.

How Does a Degree in Nursing Prepare You with the Skills Needed in Healthcare?

For registered nurses (RN), it can be important to build on previous nursing knowledge and learn valuable new skills to help you achieve in your career. UMGC’s bachelor’s in nursing is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and can help students with their career advancement.

Aryanna Abbitt earned her bachelor’s in nursing in 2025 and developed essential business and career-relevant skills that will serve her well in the healthcare industry.

“I strengthened my communication skills by effectively presenting healthcare policies, financial analyses, and marketing strategies,” said Abbitt. “My coursework also enhanced my leadership and teamwork skills, as I collaborated on group projects and led discussions on healthcare management solutions.”

In addition, Abbitt refined her analytical and research skills through data-driven assignments, such as evaluating healthcare economics, performing statistical analyses, and assessing hospital performance metrics.

“These experiences have equipped me to make informed, strategic decisions in the ever-evolving healthcare landscape,” said Abbitt. “I am confident that these skills will allow me to contribute meaningfully to my field and advance my career in healthcare administration.”
