Transfer Credit Requirements

Find out how many credits you can transfer toward a degree.

The number of credits you can transfer depends on the University of Maryland Global Campus degree you're pursuing. For prior-year transfer credit requirements, students should refer to the applicable catalog for their degree or certificate program.

Associate’s Degree Students

The associate's degree is available to a limited audience, including military, veterans, and non-Maryland residents.

  • You can transfer up to 45 credits toward your associate's degree at UMGC.
  • We accept transfer credits based on your military education, training, and experience.

Bachelor’s Degree Students

  • You can transfer up to 70 credits from an approved two-year community college.
  • You can transfer up to 90 credits from an approved four-year college, university, or other combined sources, including credit by examination, military service, or noncollegiate training.

Transfer credits toward a bachelor's degree at UMGC must meet the following criteria:

  • No transfer credit will be awarded without official transcripts.
  • If you're requesting credit for courses from an approved two or four-year college or university, you must have earned a C or better in those courses.

Master’s Degree Students

Graduate Programs That Do Not Require DCL & PRO & CBR

We may accept up to 6 credits toward your graduate degree at UMGC if your credits were earned at an approved institution and the credits are related to your program of study.

We may accept up to 3 graduate transfer credits toward our certificate programs.

We do not accept transfer credits in these programs: cybersecurity programs, MBA, Doctor of Management, or Doctor of Management in Community College Policy and Administration.

Transfer credits toward your graduate degree at UMGC must meet the following criteria:

  • Your credits must have been earned as graduate credit.
  • Your credits must have been awarded within the time limit for the degree or certificate.
  • You must have earned a B (3.0) or better in the courses considered for transfer. These grades, however, will not be included in the calculation of your grade point average at UMGC.
  • Your department advisor and program director must determine that your transfer courses are relevant to your program of study.
  • Your credits must have been earned at an approved institution and be equivalent to graduate-level coursework or recommended for graduate-level credit by the American Council on Education.

Graduate Programs That Require DCL & PRO & CBR

The following transfer credit policies apply to students who began the following programs in fall 2016 or later:

  • Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Management and Policy
  • Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity Technology
  • Graduate Certificate in Digital Forensics and Cyber Investigation
  • Graduate Certificate in Strategic Communications
  • Master of Business Administration
  • MS in Cybersecurity Management and Policy
  • MS in Cybersecurity Technology
  • MS in Digital Forensics and Cyber Investigation
  • MS in Learning Design and Technology
  • MS in Strategic Communications

We may accept 6 semester hours of graduate transfer credit to satisfy (6 Credits, DCL 600M), PRO 600 or (6 Credits, CBR 600) if you are enrolled in a master’s degree program or graduate certificate program that requires one of these courses.

Acceptable transfer credit must have been earned at an approved institution and be equivalent to the course for which you hope to receive credit.

If you have previously earned a master’s degree from an approved institution you are eligible to receive transfer credit for DCL 600, PRO 600 or (6 Credits, CBR 600) in recognition of the associated fundamental competencies essential for successful completion of a graduate degree program.

Transfer credits toward your graduate degree at UMGC must meet the following criteria and will be reviewed for approval:

  • Credits must have been earned as graduate credit.
  • The coursework must contain assignments that required students to demonstrate the skills required in DCL 600 and PRO 600 and (6 Credits, CBR 600), which include communication, critical thinking and quantitative reasoning.
  • A grade of B (3.0) or better must have been earned in the courses considered for transfer. These grades, however, will not be included in the calculation of the grade point average at UMGC.
  • Credits must have been earned at an approved institution and be equivalent to graduate-level coursework or recommended for graduate-level credit by the American Council on Education.
