FAQs
Say goodbye to textbooks and study on your time. At UMGC, our online degrees are built specifically for the virtual environment. Yet the content is the same as any other degree and the experience is just as collaborative. UMGC offers many online degrees—including online bachelor’s degrees, online master’s degrees, online undergraduate certificates, online graduate certificates, online doctoral programs, and online associate degrees.
Just as with any degree, the time it takes to complete an online degree will depend on the program you choose, how many credits you are able to transfer, and how many credits you are able to fit into your schedule each term. At UMGC, bachelor's degree programs are 120 credits, and most master's degree programs are generally 30–36 credits, though doctoral programs are more.
Assuming you are bringing in no transfer credit and taking a full-time course load in the fall and spring terms, you can complete a UMGC degree or certificate in the following timeframes:
- Associate degree: Two years
- Bachelor's degree: Four years
- Master's degree: 16 months to two years
- Undergraduate certificate: One year
- Graduate certificate: Eight months to one year
- Doctoral degree: Three years
Please note the following:
- The MS in healthcare administration (42 credits) and MS in clinical professional counseling (60 credits) are exceptions to the above calculations for master's degrees.
- UMGC's recommended course load for graduate study is 6 credits per term (half-time). For more information, please see UMGC's Policy on Student Academic Load and Enrollment Status.
- Most incoming students bring in transfer credit that may be applicable to an undergraduate or graduate degree or certificate.
As part of our ongoing curriculum review and refresh to better serve our students, UMGC periodically refreshes its current programs and retires undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs.
