Distinguished Alumnus: Monica Dillingham Pemberton

UMGC hosted a two-part webinar with alum Monica Dillingham Pemberton, who serves as the vice president and chief information officer at the American Council on Education (ACE). Recognized as a 2025 UMGC Distinguished Alumnus; a Black Leaders Worldwide Woman to Watch; and a 2023 Diversity Women Media Elite 100 honoree; Pemberton is a passionate advocate for authenticity, resilience, and connection. 

In this webinar, Pemberton examined how authenticity, resilience, and connection can influence effective leadership. Drawing from her own personal experience and professional insight, she spoke about ways to lead with purpose, navigate change with confidence, and build meaningful relationships that can drive individual growth.

Unlock Your Earning Potential: A Conversation with Melvin Brown II

Recently, UMGC hosted an informative webinar with alum Melvin Brown II, who earned a master’s degree at UMGC and recently retired as the chief information officer (CIO) for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). A Marine Corps veteran, Brown has received multiple federal IT awards over a career that includes numerous leadership roles in federal IT, most notably at the Small Business Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

In this webinar, Brown spoke about a number of topics, including how to enhance your value and boost your earning potential; the reason why some people manage to secure impressive signing bonuses and high salaries; and the secrets to successful negotiation tactics that can take your career to the next level. 

UMGC Cybersecurity Alumni Spotlight: Damien Burks

UMGC’s Center for Security Studies recently hosted a webinar featuring alum Damien Burks, who earned a master’s degree in cybersecurity technology from UMGC in 2023 and is currently the senior vice president of cloud security engineering at a global bank. He previously served as a security software engineer at Verizon, holds multiple Amazon Web Services (AWS) certifications, and now shares his industry knowledge through his DevSec Blueprint organization and YouTube channel.

In this webinar, Burks shared information on a number of topics, including his path to a career in cybersecurity; how the master’s in cybersecurity technology helped him obtain, and excel in, his current position; juggling multiple responsibilities in his leadership role; and why it is important to share his experiences with others.
