Libraries have continued to expand beyond their walls and increasingly into digital spaces. Today, public libraries provide no-cost access to online services that allow people to digitally access and borrow materials like books, audiobooks, movies, and more. Depending on the library, they may also provide complimentary access to newspapers, magazines, tutorials, and a variety of other useful resources.

So, when students need trusted tools and resources to succeed in college or graduate school, where do they turn? To an online library, naturally.

For students working toward an undergraduate or graduate degree or certificate online, the online library at their university is an essential part of academic success. Instead of navigating the broader web to find reliable resources, students can access credible sources, specialized databases, ebooks, videos, research assistance, and librarian support through a single online portal. Online libraries often provide 24/7 access to scholarly materials, expert guidance, and research tools wherever students are located.

The online library at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is a digital resource that gives students the information they need to succeed in school. Resources are delivered to students’ devices in ways designed to streamline their study. Whether you’re conducting in-depth research, checking facts and sources to meet an assignment deadline, or just need some help finding your way around, the UMGC online library can meet the need.

Get the Resources You Need—Anywhere in the World

UMGC students have round-the-clock access to UMGC's online library, including an extensive collection of ebooks, reports, journal articles, data, and more.

Students can browse a vast selection of digital materials across every subject and discipline. A wide range of resources, including more than 450,000 ebook titles, are immediately available online. Students can also find journal articles and specific book chapters that can be delivered online by request. It’s easy for students to get started.

What Are Some New Online Library Resources?

UMGC has continued expanding both its library resources and the overall student experience, particularly in the areas of AI literacy, research support, accessibility, and user-centered online services.

“One of the biggest developments," said Julie Harding, Director of Library Services at UMGC, "has been the introduction of Research Assistant, an AI-supported research tool designed to help students explore topics, identify relevant sources, and strengthen their research process, with a strong emphasis on using AI responsibly and effectively in academic work."

Other new resources include:

  • A comprehensive guide to AI and guidelines for student use of AI
  • New webinars focused on AI literacy and responsible AI use in academic research
  • Expanded online guides and tutorials related to generative AI tools
  • Student guidance for evaluating AI-generated information critically and ethically

UMGC has also added improved accessibility of the library website and content and enhanced assistance for students building skills in research, digital literacy, and critical thinking.

Get the Assistance You Need—Whenever You Need It

At UMGC, librarians are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year via online chat and by email whenever you need fast, efficient help with assignments. We also offer Zoom appointments for students with a UMGC librarian during business hours.

If you’re a new student and need help with logging in, navigating resources, and executing search tasks, the library website provides a user-friendly, one-stop experience designed to help you get started, answer your questions, and make sure that everything you need is easily accessible.

Use the Library to Your Advantage with OneSearch

For those who regularly use the library for advanced research and need support with database navigation and search refinement, the UMGC library provides OneSearch, an advanced library system that offers faster searching, easier discovery, and a more personalized user experience across devices.

OneSearch lets you take control of your learning and dig deeper into your topics of study. You can save time by simultaneously searching multiple databases or just search for newspapers, articles, or ebooks separately. You can also uncover resources through virtual title browsing and citation trails and find open-access and peer-reviewed resources easily. The interface lets you log in and save your favorite searches, mark items for later use, and easily export records to citation management systems. And, all of these functions can be accessed via your mobile device.

The UMGC online library is a digital-first experience built from the ground up with students' needs in mind. You'll find it indispensable.
