What happens if I’m accused of academic misconduct?
Academic integrity is important, and most concerns are resolved directly with your instructor. If not, the Office of Academic Integrity and Accountability (OAIA) may get involved.
How the process works:
- Instructor Feedback: Respond promptly and revise work if allowed.
- Instructor Consults OAIA (if needed): A case manager reviews the situation and may either treat it as a learning opportunity or file a formal academic misconduct case.
- If a Case Is Filed:
- Notification: You have 5 business days to respond.
- Documentation Review: Review the case summary and respond within 6 business days.
- Decision: Case manager notifies you of the outcome.
- Possible Outcomes:
- Minor issues: Redo work for a reduced grade or complete educational activities.
- Serious/repeated issues: Failing grade, probation, suspension, expulsion, or degree revocation.
- Appeals: Submit within 5 business days if new information arises or procedures weren’t followed.
