For University of Maryland Global Campus’ 75th anniversary, we spoke with Peter Hillman from the DC Government about their alliance with UMGC. Thanks to the alliance, DC Government employees can receive an affordable and accredited education at UMGC that can help them boost their careers.

What is your position with DC Government?

I am a human resources specialist (HR) with a concentration in learning and development, and I work for the DC Government under the Department of Human Resources (DCHR). I am a facilitator of professional development courses and am responsible for managing the relationships with DC Gov’s university partners.

How long has DC Government been working with UMGC?

I believe it has been for the past 8 years.

What attributes about UMGC made DC Gov wanted to work with them?

DC Gov is committed to providing their employees with as many professional development opportunities as possible. We recognized the benefits of a college degree and certificates and wanted a partner with a like-minded organization like UMGC.

UMGC recently introduced its new mission “Inspire hope, empower dreams, and transform lives ... one student at a time.” – What does that mean to you?

It reminds me to keep a positive outlook on life and share that positivity with those I meet. To keep believing in my own dreams and provide a safe space to ensure and encourage that others can do the same to improve their situations. And, to make it that everyone who is looking for the opportunity, regardless of their past experiences have the same access to these resources.

How have DC Gov employees responded to the UMGC programs offered? How have the programs helped them and your organization?

We have had several employees take advantage of the programs and certificates being offered. I believe that those investing in their development will receive immediate feedback through professional growth and our residents and visitors of DC will benefit as well.

UMGC is celebrating 75 years of excellence in education. What does their long-dedicated education history mean to you? Why is it important?

A proven track record of excellence is very important when it comes to having a good reputation in an industry and 75 years of dedicated service to the education speaks volumes.

Which of UMGC core values resonates with DC Gov the most and why?
(Students First, Accountability, Diversity, Integrity, Excellence, Innovation, Respect, or People Always)

Students First – It’s about the student, and, for DC Government, the flexibility of the online programs that UMGC offers puts the adult student and their schedule first.

Innovation – Making the most of the latest technology is also important as it helps keep our employees on the cutting edge and DC Government competitive with other organizations looking for the best talent available.

What are three adjectives or words that best describe your partnership with UMGC?

  • Collaboration
  • Communicative
  • Flexible

Where do you hope to see UMGC in the next 75 years?

As continued leader in the education industry, helping others to stay inspired through empowering dreams one student at a time!
