  1. Purpose
    University of Maryland Global Campus ("University" or "UMGC") is committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning and work environment by prohibiting Weapons on University Property.
  2. Scope
    This Policy applies to UMGC employees and students as well as anyone entering or utilizing University Property.    
    This Policy does not apply at UMGC locations or UMGC-sponsored events on military bases as military bases are under the control of the Department of Defense (DOD). As such, individuals at these locations must follow applicable DOD policies and guidelines regarding Weapons on base. Issues regarding Weapons on a military base should be directed to the applicable DOD police.
  3. Definitions
    1. University Property: Any location owned, rented, leased, occupied, or used by and under the control of UMGC.
    2. Weapon: Any object or substance designed or used to inflict a wound, cause injury, or incapacitate, including, but not limited to, all firearms, pellet guns, switchblade knives, knives, and chemicals such as mace products, pepper spray, or tear gas.
  4. Policy Statements
    1. UMGC prohibits the possession, carrying, or control of all Weapons, replicas of Weapons, or ammunition on any University Property.
    2. In addition, UMGC employees and students are prohibited from possessing, carrying, or controlling Weapons, replicas of Weapons, or ammunition at any location where they are assigned as part of their employment, educational experience, or otherwise representing UMGC.
  5. Exceptions
    1. The UMGC Director of Security shall be promptly notified of any special circumstances regarding Weapons on University Property.
    2. UMGC Security or other Law Enforcement Officers whose official duties require them to be on University Property may carry their assigned service Weapons in compliance with the rules and regulations of their employing agencies.
    3. Applicable local, state, or country laws or regulations shall prevail in the event that they are in conflict with this Policy.
  6. Enforcement
    1. Alleged violations of this Policy must be reported immediately to the UMGC Director of Security.
    2. All persons alleged to have violated this Policy may be subject to a No Trespass Order, in accordance with UMGC Procedures Regarding No Trespass Orders. All persons found in violation of this Policy may be subject to other penalties and disciplinary action, both within and outside of UMGC.
    3. Alleged violations by students will normally be handled in accordance with the procedures outlined in UMGC's Code of Student Conduct.
    4. UMGC Employees who violate this Policy may be subject to disciplinary action up to, and including, termination of employment or contract. The Office of Human Resources (HR) will be notified of any alleged violations and HR, Employee Relations will manage a formal review and investigation with assistance from Security.
