Searching for Cultural Identity Exhibition

The Collection of Jerome Gray and Brenda Sayles

Join the UMGC community as we reflect on the work of art collector Jerome Gray and his wife Brenda Sayles. Gray's quest for art depicting aspects of African American life and culture took him to auction houses, garage sales, galleries, and artist studios. The result is a treasure trove ranging from unsigned pieces to works by some of America's most well-known African American artists, including Jacob Lawrence, Lois Mailou Jones, Alma Thomas, and James Lesesne Wells. This exhibition, featuring approximately 50 artworks, reveals Gray's personal objectives for collecting and preserving art.
