Before the Americas includes approximately 40 thought-provoking works by Caribbean, African, Latino, Afro-Latino, and African American artists who are working or have worked in the greater Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Curator Cheryl Edwards conceived and curated the exhibition with the goal of sharing the cultural riches of the artists’ inspiration: their stories, experiences, and individual backgrounds. Together, these artists explore themes of ancestral memory, migration, invisibility, and interconnectivity.
