FAQs: National Community College Alliances

What are the benefits of the UMGC community college alliance transfer program? +

Benefits of the UMGC alliance transfer program include:

  • Guaranteed admission for qualified students who have graduated with an associate's degree from a community college alliance partner
  • A flexible transfer credit policy that accommodates community college and nontraditional credit
  • Scholarship opportunities for part-time and full-time students
  • A wide variety of online bachelor's degrees programs designed to articulate with your associate’s degree program
  • A full array of student services, including 24-hour library assistance, tutors, clubs, and honor societies, accessible online

How do I apply to UMGC as a community college alliance student? +

Complete these steps to apply for admission. A special benefit of being a community college alliance student is the waiver of UMGC’s $50 application fee. Please note that the application fee can only be waived if you have not yet completed an associate degree at a community or technical college.

How many credits can I transfer to UMGC? +

UMGC will accept up to 90 credits from all collegiate schools attended, including applicable military credit. Of the total credits, up to 70 credits may be from a community or technical college. We encourage you to complete an associate’s degree before transferring.

Do I need to ask my community or technical college to send academic transcripts to UMGC? +

After you are admitted to UMGC, you should have your transcript sent from your community or technical college for the purpose of transfer evaluation and advising.

Do I have to complete my associate degree before enrolling at UMGC? +

No, but it may be to your advantage to complete your associate degree first. Graduates from a community or technical college have found the associate degree to be useful in obtaining jobs or promotions while continuing to pursue a bachelor's degree. If you graduated with an associate degree from a Maryland community college, you may be eligible for the Completion Scholarship. Plus, UMGC guarantees admission for qualified students who have graduated with an associate's degree from a community college alliance partner.

If you are interested in enrolling in classes at both your community college and UMGC at the same time, learn more about dual enrollment.

If I am admitted to my community or technical college, am I automatically admitted to UMGC? +

No, you must complete UMGC's online application for admission, separate from the application at your community or technical college. After you are admitted to both UMGC and the community or technical college, you may be dually enrolled.

If I am admitted to UMGC through the alliance, am I also admitted to other University System of Maryland institutions? +

No. The dual admission applies to UMGC and your community college only. Other USM institutions require separate applications for admission.

How are Prior Learning Portfolio credits used in my degree? +

Credits awarded through Portfolio can fulfill major, minor, elective, or general education requirements. However, no more than half the credits for the major and the minor may be earned through Portfolio. Contact your academic advisor to assist you in determining the academic areas in which Portfolio credits might be used best.

If I am currently enrolled at UMGC, can I take additional courses at a community or technical college? +

Whether you can take additional courses from a community college will depend on the number of credits originally transferred to UMGC from a community college.

Which degrees are available online? +

Browse academic programs, the majority of which can be completed entirely online. If an on-site requirement exists, it is specified on each program page.

Which student services are available online? +

A full array of support services is available to you, including advising, registration, admission, financial aid, library assistance, tutors, clubs, honor societies, and 24/7 technical support.

If I am a community college alliance student, which institution will handle my veterans benefits paperwork? +

While you are taking courses from the community college only, they will process your veterans benefits. As soon as you plan to register for your first class at UMGC, contact a veterans advisor at 800-888-8682.

What library resources are available to me as a UMGC student? +

University System of Maryland library services are available to UMGC students. These services include:

  • Accessing databases, many containing full-text articles, available through the UMGC Library
  • Requesting reference assistance by e-mail, phone, or through the UMGC Library
  • Requesting journal articles through interlibrary loan
