Education Programs
Master of Arts in Teaching
UMGC currently offers a Master of Arts in Teaching. This program is designed to help prepare students to obtain initial certification as a teacher in Maryland in the field of secondary education in a specific subject area. Learn more about Maryland's requirements for initial licensure. Students seeking licensure in another state are advised to contact the appropriate licensing board in their state. In particular, students seeking licensure in another state should confirm that the specific subject area they wish to pursue is available for licensure in that state.
Degrees or Credits from Non-Regionally Accredited Institutions: For some programs, UMGC may accept undergraduate degrees or transfer credit on a case-by-case basis from a non-regionally accredited institution that is accredited by a national accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education or Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The Maryland State Department of Education may not accept undergraduate degrees or credit from non-regionally accredited institutions as meeting the education requirements to obtain initial licensure as a teacher in Maryland. Licensing boards in other states may not accept such credit or degrees. Accordingly, UMGC does not accept undergraduate degrees or transfer credit from non-regionally accredited institutions for students enrolling in the Masters of Art in Teaching program. Contact the Maryland State Department of Education to learn more about Maryland's education requirements for initial licensure.
UMGC's Master of Arts in Teaching program is not open for enrollment to residents of Kentucky unless approved by UMGC on a case-by-case basis. Please e-mail us for further information regarding UMGC's MAT program.
Department of Defense Schools
If a student resides in a state in which UMGC is not currently accepting students and the student is eligible to complete the program's field and clinical requirements at a Department of Defense Education Activity school, the student may e-mail us to discuss options for enrollment in the MAT program.

Master of Education in Instructional Technology
UMGC currently offers the Master of Education in instructional technology program. This program does not lead to initial teacher certification in Maryland, but rather is designed to enhance skills in instructional technology. Students seeking initial teacher certification in Maryland or another state should consider enrolling in UMGC's Master of Arts in Teaching program.
Maryland does not offer additional licenses, certifications, or endorsements for graduates of the Master of Education in instructional technology program. Other states, however, may offer additional licenses, certifications, or endorsements for graduates of this type of program. Although UMGC is offering distance education in compliance with all states' laws, we cannot confirm whether this program meets other state's education requirements to obtain additional licensure. Students who wish to take this program to seek additional licensure in another state are advised to contact the appropriate licensing board in their state.
Currently, UMGC's Master of Education in instructional technology program is not open for enrollment to residents of Kentucky, unless approved by UMGC on a case-by-case basis.
Department of Defense Schools
If a student resides in a state in which UMGC is not currently accepting students and the student is eligible to complete the program's field and clinical requirements at a Department of Defense Education Activity school, the student may e-mail us to discuss options for enrollment in the MEd in instructional technology program.
