What is the difference between taking classes as a visiting student and dual enrollment?
Both options let you take classes at more than one school, but they serve different situations:
| Visiting Student | Dual Enrollment |
|---|---|
| You're already enrolled at another college or university and want to take a class at UMGC temporarily. | You're still in high school and want to earn college credits while finishing your diploma. |
| You apply as a visiting (non-degree seeking) student, often through a formal agreement like the Inter-Institutional Enrollment Program (IIEP) if you're at another Maryland public institution. | You apply through UMGC's Dual Enrollment program, typically working with your high school counselor and UMGC Admissions. |
| Credits usually transfer back to your home college to count toward your degree there. | Credits apply to your high school graduation requirements and your future college degree. |
Tip:
- If you're already in college, you are likely a visiting student.
- If you're in high school, you are likely looking for dual enrollment.
