Can I update my FAFSA if my financial situation has changed?

If your financial situation has changed since you submitted the FAFSA, you may be eligible to request a review through a Special Circumstances Appeal.

Situations that may qualify include:

  • Loss of income or job
  • Separation or divorce
  • Death of a parent or spouse
  • Permanent disability

How to Submit a Special Circumstances Appeal

  1. Download the form: Visit the Special Circumstances Appeal page to get the correct form for your situation.
  2. Complete the form: Fill out all sections. Incomplete forms cannot be reviewed.
  3. Submit your appeal: Upload your completed form and supporting documents by submitting a case through the UMGC Help Center.
  4. Watch for updates: Within 5-7 business days, the Office of Financial Aid will contact you if additional information is needed.
  5. Receive a decision: Once all documents are complete, a decision is typically made within 10 business days.

Tip: To avoid delays, make sure your name, student ID, signature, and date appear on all forms and documents.
