What can cause my Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) benefits to decrease?

Your Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits may be reduced if you’re receiving other types of tuition funding. UMGC is required to report a lower tuition amount to the VA when you use:

  • Non-refundable scholarships
  • Military or employer tuition assistance
  • Tuition remission
  • External aid payments
  • MyCAA (My Career Advancement Account Scholarship)
  • University System of Maryland (USM) waivers

Note: Grants, loans, and financial aid do not reduce the amount reported to the VA. However, they’ll be applied to your balance first. If your aid exceeds your tuition and fees after VA payments, you may receive a refund.

For help understanding your VA payments, contact the Department of Veterans Affairs Education Customer Service Office at 1-888-442-4551 or the GI Bill website.
