How long do I have to repay a Parent PLUS Loan?

Repayment typically begins once the loan is fully disbursed. However, parents can request a deferment while the student is enrolled at least half-time and for six months after they graduate, leave school, or drop below half-time.

Repayment Options (10-25 years)

  • Standard: Fixed payments over 10 years (default).
  • Graduated: Payments start low, increase every 2 years, and are repaid in 10 years.
  • Extended: Up to 25 years (must owe $30,000+ in Direct Loans).
  • Income-Contingent (ICR): Available if the loan is consolidated.

You can switch plans anytime by contacting your loan servicer. Use the Loan Servicer Directory to locate your loan servicer.
