What will happen to my military tuition assistance in a government shutdown
Approved TA
- If your TA is already approved, keep attending your classes as scheduled.
- If your approved TA is not paid by the government, you may be eligible for a one-time UMGC grant equal to the confirmed TA amount.
No Approved TA Yet
- TA-eligible students without approved TA may qualify for a one-time UMGC grant of up to $750.
- Grant eligibility follows the TA windows for each military service branch.
Important Considerations
- After the shutdown, students are encouraged to seek retroactive TA from their branch of service.
- The grant can only be applied to:
- Fall 2025 term balance for classes starting on or after October 1, 2025.
- Balances remaining after all other sources of financial aid for the term have been applied.
- Grade requirements:
- Undergraduate students must earn at least a C.
- Graduate students must earn at least a B.
- If grade requirements are not met, the grant will be cancelled and the student will be responsible for the resulting balance.
- Exclusions: USNCC students are not eligible for this grant.
Next Steps & Support
- Contact your local UMGC representative or email military@umgc.edu for guidance.
- If you are near a base, meet with a UMGC field representative for personalized support.
Disclaimer: Eligibility is determined by UMGC and is subject to review. This information does not guarantee a grant award. Students should also pursue any retroactive TA from their branch of service once the shutdown concludes.
