Is UMGC part of the University of Maryland?

UMGC is part of the University System of Maryland (USM), a group of public universities in Maryland. While UMGC and the University of Maryland, College Park are both in the USM, they are separate schools with different missions and programs.

UMGC started in the 1920s as evening classes for adults. It became its own university in the 1970s and has focused on serving adult and working students ever since. In the 1990s, UMGC became one of the first schools to offer fully online bachelor's degrees. In 2019, it changed its name to University of Maryland Global Campus to reflect its global reach.
