What are the eligibility requirements for an independent student?

When you apply for financial aid, the federal government determines whether you’re considered a dependent or independent student. Independent students are evaluated based on their own (and their spouse’s, if applicable) income and assets — not their parents’.

You’re considered independent if you meet at least one of the following:

  • You’re 24 or older by January 1 of the school year.
  • You’re enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program.
  • You’re married (including separated).
  • You provide more than half of the financial support for your children or dependents.
  • You’re legally emancipated or in legal guardianship.
  • You’ve been in foster care, are homeless, or are a veteran or currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

If none of these apply, you’re considered dependent and must include your parents’ financial information on the FAFSA. If your situation is unusual, contact the Office of Financial Aid for guidance.
