What is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of your education records.

FERPA gives you the right to:

  • Review your education records maintained by UMGC
  • Request corrections to records you believe are inaccurate
  • Control disclosure of your records to third parties (with some exceptions)

Exceptions

UMGC may share information without your consent for certain purposes, such as:

  • School officials with a legitimate educational interest
  • Financial aid eligibility
  • Compliance with a judicial order or law enforcement request
To allow someone access to your education records, you will need to submit a Student Records Release Form.

Visit the Annual Notification of Rights under FERPA.
