How do I enroll in MFA using an Authenticator App?

Access the MFA Setup Portal

Add or Update Your Phone Number

  1. On the Security Info Page, locate your smartphone number in the Phone field.
    • Check Number: Verify that the correct mobile number is already listed in the phone field, if correct, skip down to Authenticator App directions.
    • Update Number: If you need to change your phone number, select the Change hyperlink and update your information. See Security: How do I update my smartphone number? for more information.
    • Add Number: If you need to add a phone number, follow the steps below. Note: When adding smartphone numbers for Japan and Korea, be sure to remove the first digit (0) if it appears at the beginning of the phone number.
      1. Click + Add sign-in method.
      2. Select Phone from the dropdown menu.
      3. Choose your country code.
      4. Enter your smartphone number that you will use for MFA.
      5. Select whether you want to receive a code on your smartphone via text message or a call.
      6. Click Next.
      7. Enter the code you receive on your smartphone and click Next again.
      8. Click Done to complete the setup.
  2. Your phone number will now show under Security Info.

Set up Microsoft Authenticator App

  1. Once your phone number has been added, updated, or confirmed, you will need to set up an Authenticator App.
  2. On your computer, navigate to the Security Info Page.
  3. Click + Add sign-in method.
  4. Select Microsoft Authenticator App.
    • If you currently use an authenticator app other than Microsoft, select Use a different authenticator app.
      • Important: UMGC only supports Microsoft Authenticator as the recommended authentication app. While you may use alternative authentication apps, please note that UMGC cannot provide technical support or assistance for these applications. For setup and troubleshooting of alternative apps, refer to their specific instructions and support resources.
  5. If this is your first time downloading Microsoft Authenticator, follow the steps below:
    • Download Microsoft Authenticator from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store on your smartphone.
    • Open the app on your smartphone once the download is complete.
      • Accept the Privacy Statement.
      • Click Continue.
      • Click + in the top right of your Microsoft Authenticator.
      • Select Work or school account.
      • Select Scan a QR Code.
      • Allow the app to access your camera.
    • Go to your computer and use your smartphone to Scan the QR code that is displayed.
    • Enable notifications on your smartphone.
      • UMGC recommends enabling notifications, but it is not required.
    • You will receive a prompt on your computer to test the app.
    • Enter the two-digit number displayed on your computer into the prompt on your smartphone.
    • Once authenticated, the Microsoft Authenticator App will show as an option on your Security Info Page.
      • Congratulations, you are enrolled in MFA.
  6. Going forward, after entering your password, you will be prompted to enter the two-digit code provided by the Microsoft Authenticator App to access your UMGC accounts.
