How do I complete a Statement of Educational Purpose (SEP)?

The Statement of Educational Purpose (SEP) is a form that confirms who you are and that you plan to use your federal financial aid for your education. You may be asked to complete this form if your FAFSA was selected for V4 or V5 verification.

To complete the SEP:

  • Show a valid photo ID (like a driver's license or passport).
  • Sign the form in person with a UMGC staff member or sign it in front of a notary if you can't visit in person.
  • Send the signed form and a copy of your ID to the UMGC Financial Aid Office.

Tip: If you're military-affiliated, you may be able to complete the form in person with a field representative near your location.
