At UMGC, we believe that everyone has a story worth telling—stories of triumph, perseverance, and transformation, and that’s why we launched the Unstoppable Stories podcast.  From entrepreneurs and artists to athletes and educators, our guests share their personal journeys, offering valuable insights, life lessons, and inspiration. Episodes air twice a month.

Gavata Smith

On March 11, we featured Gavata Smith, a project manager and UMGC student who turned early setbacks into a roadmap for growth through faith, forgiveness, and steady self-improvement. Transparent about past mistakes, she models healing in action and gives her community practical hope. Gavata pays it forward through mentorship for women, a domestic violence ministry, and hands on coaching that strengthens resumes and interview skills.

Jeannie Lum

On March 25, we featured Jeannie Lum, who is passionate about helping people and communities connect with education and opportunities that can change their lives. Born in the Philippines and raised as a military kid, she learned early on the value of connection, keeping family bonds alive through pottery, a practice she still treasures today.

Now living in O’ahu with her two autistic daughters, Jeannie serves as Outreach Partnership Specialist at UMGC, building relationships across Hawaii and championing access for diverse and non-traditional learners. Her story shows that leadership and advocacy come from the heart, culture, and commitment to connection, and that learning happens through life, community, and meaningful relationships.
