Chair, Accounting, Finance and Economics

Biography

James Falter, DBA, is the chair of accounting, finance and economics at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). In this role, he leads curriculum, program development, and management for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting and finance. Before this role, he held academic leadership positions, including being a master’s-level program director and dean for a school of business.

Before entering higher education teaching, Falter began his business experience with Cigna and Aetna/U.S. Healthcare, specializing in financial analysis and underwriting of group benefits. Falter has had several articles published in annual proceedings of the Academy of Accounting, Finance & Economics, the Institute for Business and Finance Research, the Midwest Finance Association, Southern Finance Association, and the Southwest Finance Association.

In addition to teaching many areas of finance and management, Falter is active in academic program review, accreditation, and assessment. He holds the industry designations of Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) and consults and conducts seminars on financial management, investment planning, and budgeting. Falter has a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), a Master of Business Administration (MBA), and a Bachelor of Science in business administration/economics.
