With barely a week’s notice, seven educators packed their bags and flew on Oct. 2, 1949, to Heidelberg, Germany, to launch an overseas education program.

You-sook Yoon and Eun-Mi Seo, who both teach Korean language classes to University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) students in Asia, are among the eight faculty members honored with this year’s Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Award. The prize is the highest faculty honor that the university bestows.

Veteran and UMGC alum Richard Rice launched the nonprofit K9’s for Veterans Abroad in 2018. The organization provides trained service dogs at no charge to former or current military members in Europe.

UMGC is continuing its 75-year history of meeting students where they are, this time stepping forward to support servicemembers near the war in Ukraine, who are on the ground in Poland and Romania. There are plans to have educators on site in the spring.
