Adelphi, Md. (July 25, 2023)—University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and Northwell Health announced an education alliance that expands access and affordability of higher education to the healthcare system’s 84,000 employees. The alliance brings together UMGC’s pioneering online and hybrid degree programs with Northwell’s commitment to its employees to provide educational opportunities that will help them gain knowledge in critical areas in healthcare.

“We are pleased to join with Northwell Health and provide higher education opportunities for employees who work every day on the cutting edge of medicine and biomedical research, as well as the front lines of health education,” said Blakely Pomietto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at UMGC. “We offer an array of programs in critical subject areas, such as health services management, nursing, biotechnology and bioinformatics, and gerontology and aging services, that can enable employees to achieve their educational goals and better serve their communities.”

The agreement enables Northwell Health’s employees and their families to waive the university’s application fee and take classes at discounted tuition rates. Employees can take individual courses or enroll in any of UMGC’s more than 135 undergraduate and graduate degree or certificate programs, all available fully online. In addition to the discounted tuition rates and waived application fee, UMGC also offers cost savings through its use of digital resources, which have replaced costly publisher textbooks in most courses.

“Education is a vital component to Northwell’s success as a national leader in health care,” said Maxine Carrington, senior vice president and chief people officer for the health system. “This alliance is another exciting opportunity to provide easier access for our team members and their families to pursue a higher education. Our continued investment in the future of our workforce is our commitment to providing quality care in the communities we serve.”

Students enrolling in UMGC’s degree programs may be eligible to transfer credits from other institutions and/or earn credit for prior learning, thus shortening the path to a degree.
