Stand Out by Following the Five Tips
UMGC students and alumni can find new job opportunities by joining UMGC Virtual Recruiting Events. These online events bring together multiple employers in one place, making it easy to explore job openings and talk to recruiters. Since the events are virtual, participants can join from anywhere, increasing accessibility and convenience.
Can’t make it to a live event? No problem! Be sure to register anyway—registration gives you full access to the platform throughout Preview Week, which starts one week prior to the live event.
Get the most out of the next virtual career event—regardless of whether you attend live—with the five tips below.
1. Update Your Resume
When you register for the event, you’ll create a profile and be asked to upload your resume. CareerQuest's VMock tool offers instant feedback to create or update a resume—making sure it’s recruiter-ready.
Pro Tip: Once you have perfected and uploaded your resume, recruiters will have access to your resume before, during, and after the event.
2. Research Potential Employers
Next, take some time to review the review the Employer Matrix—your go-to guide for seeing which organizations will be participating. This resource offers a quick snapshot of each employer, helping you identify those that align with your interests, experience, and career goals.
Once you've found potential matches, visit their company websites, explore current job openings, and note any roles that fit your background. This step is often overlooked but can help you stand out. Benefits include:
- Identifying the best-fit employers ahead of time.
- Gaining insight into open roles that match your skills.
- Feeling more prepared and confident going into conversations.
Pro Tip: If you find a position that excites you, consider applying before the event. This not only shows initiative, but also signals genuine interest to recruiters—giving you a competitive edge during one-on-one discussions.
3. Join a Prep Session Webinar
UMGC’s Virtual Prep Sessions are designed to help you feel confident and ready for the event. These interactive sessions offer expert guidance to help you make the most of your experience:
- Understand the event's format.
- Refine your elevator pitch to make a strong impression.
- Hear insider tips from recruiters or employers attending the event.
- Leverage strategies from UMGC Career Advising Specialists to stand out.
Whether you're new to career events or looking to improve your approach, these sessions are a smart step forward. Register for a prep session on the CareerQuest events page.
4. Practice Your Pitch
One great part of a virtual career event is the chance to chat one-on-one with recruiters, so strong written communication is important. Take time to write a concise introduction in full sentences while avoiding slang and emojis. Your pitch should:
- Highlight your strengths.
- Show your interest in the company or industry.
- Explain how you’re a good fit.
- Share your personal “why”.
Pro Tip: Prepare a few questions in advance for each recruiter to maximize your time with them and take detailed notes on their responses.
5. Explore the Platform During Preview Week
Registration gives you full access to the platform throughout Preview Week, which starts one week prior to the live event. During preview week, you'll be able to:
- Browse company booths at your own pace.
- Update your profile and upload your resume.
- Apply for job opportunities.
- Get noticed by recruiters for current and future roles.
Preview Week is the perfect chance to participate on your own schedule and make a strong impression before the event begins.
