Maryland award honors excellence in academic nursing education
Hannah Anderson Hughes, PhD, collegiate professor, portfolio director for nursing, and chief nurse administrator at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), recently received the NSP II Academic Nurse Educator Certification (ANEC) award from the State of Maryland.
The ANEC program recognizes nursing faculty who demonstrate excellence in academic nursing education by earning and maintaining the National League for Nursing's Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) credential, a nationally recognized certification.
Through her leadership and commitment to nursing education, Hughes helps prepare registered nurses pursuing bachelor's degrees through UMGC's RN-to-BSN program.
Lauren Segura, PhD, portfolio vice president and dean of the School of Integrative and Professional Studies, nominated Hughes for the award.
"I enthusiastically supported Dr. Hughes for the ANEC award because of her sustained excellence as a nurse educator, her leadership in advancing curriculum innovation, and her unwavering commitment to student and faculty success," said Segura. "Her focus on delivering high-quality nursing education, promoting faculty development, and advocating for students distinguishes her as an outstanding nurse educator and leader worthy of this recognition."
In addition to recognizing achievement, the award provides funding for professional development to foster continued teaching and leadership excellence. The funding will help Hughes continue to support nurses as they progress through UMGC’s RN-to-BSN program, which allows working registered nurses to build skills, earn bachelor’s degrees, and contribute to the healthcare workforce in Maryland and beyond.
