University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) participated in AFCEA WEST 2026, February 10-12, connecting with military, government, industry, and academic leaders at one of the nation’s leading defense and technology conferences.

Hosted by AFCEA International, the annual event brings together professionals focused on communications, IT, intelligence, cybersecurity, and national security. UMGC attended to highlight degree and certificate programs aligned with these mission areas and to share flexible education pathways that support career advancement for active-duty service members, veterans, and industry professionals.

Throughout the conference, UMGC hosted an exhibit booth showcasing programs in cybersecurity, technology, and defense-related fields. A highlight of the university’s presence was a hands-on Capture the Flag cybersecurity challenge led by collegiate faculty member Jesse Varsalone in partnership with Hack The Box. The interactive competition drew consistent engagement during the first two days of the event, offering attendees a practical, skills-based experience while fostering friendly competition.

Reflecting on the value of the event, Outreach Partnership Specialist Katy Sabala emphasized the importance of relationship-building and connection. “I always look forward to being part of this event each year,” Sabala said. “We truly enjoy reconnecting with the incredible people we’ve met over the years, building stronger relationships, and having meaningful conversations that help industry professionals, service members, and veterans take the next step in their careers or confidently transition into a new field.”

Other UMGC team members in attendance included Rachel Bennett, regional director; and outreach partnership specialists Jaleece Durham and Ciara Costanzo.
