Adelphi, Md. (Nov. 14, 2022) -- The International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), a global cybersecurity technical certification body, has selected University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) for its 2022 Academic Circle of Excellence.

The distinction highlights academic institutions and faculty across the world who excel each year and leave a lasting impact on cybersecurity education and local communities. UMGC becomes one of just five Academic Circle of Excellence honorees this year.

“The values and criteria of the selection process directly reflect our mission of preparing students for EC-Council certifications, graduation and the workforce,” said Douglas Harrison, vice president and dean of UMGC’s School of Cybersecurity and Information Technology. “That the number of UMGC students pursuing EC-Council certifications is one of the largest in the country reflects our commitment to providing students with the skills employers value most.”

Wesley Alvarez, director of academics for EC-Council, noted that UMGC students, alumni and faculty have been active, contributing members of EC-Council global cybersecurity community for several years. “They have produced leading certified, career-ready candidates as they continue their mission to serve adult learners, veterans, military servicemembers and their families with innovative cybersecurity programs,” he said.

UMGC was selected based on several criteria, including its commitment to educate and make a difference in the cybersecurity workforce, its ratio of students who attempt EC-Council certifications, its effort to institute new programs and technologies across credit or non-credit programs and its support of student initiatives, clubs and events.

In 2021, UMGC was named EC-Council’s 2021 Academic Partner of the Year, another coveted honor that recognizes the leading cybersecurity partner and program within the council’s North America community.
