Nation’s Largest Public Online University Taps CPA With More Than 20 Years of Senior-Level Finance and Budget Experience in Higher Education and Health Care
Adelphi, Md. (Sept. 26, 2018)—University of Maryland University College (UMUC), the nation’s largest public online university, is pleased to welcome Lisa Kemp as senior vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer (CFO).
Kemp is a certified public accountant (CPA) with more than 20 years of progressive experience focused on transformational financial solutions and business practices that deliver measurable enterprise results, 15 years of which were leading finance and budget operations at institutions of higher education.
Kemp served most recently as vice president for finance and budget at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, a public institution with 36,000 students, four campuses, 11 schools and an operating budget of $1.06 billion. In addition to overseeing the institution’s finances, she has been engaged in the university’s public/private partnership projects and has served on numerous multidisciplinary committees focused on data governance and technology, strategic planning, enterprise risk management and more.
“UMUC sets a global standard of excellence,” said Kemp. “I am pleased to support the finance and administrative functions of a university that embraces adaptive, transformational learning and offers top quality educational opportunities. UMUC is committed to delivering the highest value to improve the lives of adult learners in my home state of Maryland, the nation and the world.”
Before joining George Mason, Kemp served as president and CFO of Cogswell Polytechnic Institute and executive vice president and CFO of Trident University International in Cypress, California.
Prior to that, Kemp was a founding member of the executive leadership team at American Public University, where she served for seven years, helping guide the university through its regional accreditation process, implementation of a federal student financial aid program and several public offerings.
“Lisa has shown herself to be a dynamic leader who—as her experience demonstrates—excels at managing the finance and budget operations of large, complex institutions like UMUC,” said President Javier Miyares. “As she comes home to her native Maryland to take on this critical role, I look forward to benefiting from her perspective and experience as part of our senior leadership team.”
Before transitioning into higher education, Kemp served as regional director of operations for Baltimore-based HCR/Manor Care, where she was responsible for finance and operations for seven nursing care locations, overseeing plant and facilities, food service, admissions, systems and policies, transportation, customer service and satisfaction, human resources and clinical care.
Earlier, Kemp served for seven years with the public accounting firm of Wolpoff & Company, LLP, where she performed audits, reviewed tax returns and Medicaid and Medicare rate requests and verifications and conducted budget and tax projections for clients.
Kemp holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration-accounting from Mount St. Mary’s College in Maryland and an MBA with a specialization in finance from American Public University.
