UMGC Global Media Center UMUC and Fraternal Order Of Police Establish Education Alliance

New partnership offers Fraternal Order of Police members a discount on higher education

Adelphi, Md. (Sept. 25, 2018) — University of Maryland University College (UMUC) announced today that it has signed an agreement with Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the largest law enforcement labor organization in the United States with more than 330,000 members, to offer its members more affordable options to complete degrees or pursue higher education at UMUC. Through this agreement, members are eligible for a 25-percent discount on out-of-state tuition rates for most programs.

“We are pleased and excited to form this alliance with the Fraternal Order of Police,” said Blakely Pomietto, deputy chief academic officer at UMUC. “We are proud to broaden our mission—and long history—of educating military service members around the world to members of law enforcement around the nation.”

Through the partnership, FOP members can take individual courses or enroll in any of UMUC’s 95 undergraduate and graduate degree or certificate programs, most of which are available fully online. Students enrolling in UMUC’s undergraduate school may transfer credits from other universities and/or be awarded credit for prior learning if eligible under UMUC’s standard policies and procedures.

National FOP President Chuck Canterbury said, “We are absolutely delighted to have UMUC as our newest partner in the FOP University Consortium.  Education plays a tremendous role in career development, better policies and improved policing.  I always encourage our police officers to continue their formal education and with the many demands of the job, that’s not an easy thing to do. I believe this partnership, and the generous discounts afforded to our members, will encourage our officers to invest in their communities, in part, by investing in themselves.”
