UMGC Global Media Center UMUC To Host Military Appreciation Fair and Fun Run At Largo Academic Center May 5

Adelphi, Md. (April 17) -- University of Maryland University College (UMUC) will host a military appreciation fair and Fun Run on Saturday, May 5 at the Academic Center at Largo (1616 McCormick Drive, Largo).

The fair, open to all active-duty service members, veterans and their families, offers opportunities for attendees to meet with veterans’ service organizations (VSOs) and UMUC career services representatives. Attendees can also learn about the One2One mentor program that provides veterans, servicemembers, and their families with individualized, peer-to-peer support.

“Serving military and veteran students have always been part of the university’s mission,” said Keith Hawk, associate vice president for Veterans Initiatives and Military Support at UMUC. “It’s important to have a day to recognize their achievements and to provide assistance as they pursue their educational goals.”

At the fair. prospective UMUC students can enroll in Summer and Fall 2018 classes and receive one-on-one assistance from academic advisors who specialize in working with the military and veterans.

Participants can interact, as well, with UMUC students and faculty while enjoying a BBQ lunch catered by MISSION BBQ. In addition, the university will host an optional, family friendly two-mile fun run (with photos at the finish line).

The registration fee for the fun run is $25, and fees go directly to the Veterans Assistance Fund, which helps student veterans enrolled at UMUC cover costs related to education when federal financial aid and VA benefits are unavailable or exhausted.

Fun run participants must register and pay the fee in advance. The fee is non-refundable and the event is subject to weather. (Children under 12 participating in the run are free with a paid, registered adult.)
