UMGC Global Media Center Summit To Explore The Promise and Challenges Of Replacing Textbooks

Dec. 8 Event Will Bring Together Higher Education Leaders in Maryland to Discuss Digital Rights, Curating Material, Access and Quality Issues

Adelphi, Md. (Nov. 28, 2017)—As advocacy and evangelization of Open Educational Resources (OER) turn to adoption and scaling up, a pivotal summit will be held on Dec. 8 to provide educational leaders throughout the state of Maryland an opportunity to discuss lessons learned and how OER is addressing the issues of quality, access and affordability in higher education.

Advancing Postsecondary Student Success through OER: A Statewide Summit on Open Educational Resources in Higher Education will take place on Friday, Dec. 8 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, 3501 University Boulevard East in Hyattsville, Maryland. Co-sponsors of the summit are University System of Maryland’s William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation, MarylandOnline, and University of Maryland University College.

Keynote speakers Cable Green, director of Open Education at Creative Commons and David Wiley, co-founder and chief academic officer at Lumen Learning will address the changing landscape in using OER.

The summit has been designed to address the benefits and challenges faced by faculty, instructional designers, librarians and administrators from two- and four-year colleges and universities in the statewide movement to replace publisher textbooks with OER.

Participants will be able to explore freely available open source materials and learn about the impact of OER on student cost-savings, access, and success; attend workshops to gain new tools for curating, developing, and licensing OER; discuss accessibility and quality issues; and develop strategies to support an institution’s efforts to scale up the use of OER.
