University of Maryland University College Pillars of Strength Scholarship winner Vanessa Corey-Engelhardt is profiled in the first of a series of CBS Radio’s ConnectingVets.com stories that feature selfless acts of service and achievement by UMUC student servicemembers and veterans, as well as a special feature on the Forever GI Bill. The stories appear during November 2017 as part of UMUC’s partnership with ConnectingVets.com and its “Veterans Community Showcase” programming in celebration of Veterans Day.
As detailed by UMUC Global Media Center writer Mary Dempsey, Corey-Engelhardt was awarded the Pillars of Strength Scholarship that will cover the full cost of her bachelor’s degree because of her extraordinary role in caring for the injured Army Green Beret who would become her husband.

UMUC Global Media Center contributor Gil Klein has written a piece on Air Force Staff Sgt. Alicia Hunt, the inaugural recipient of the Gen. John W. Vessey Student of the Year Award. The award was announced at the university’s Veterans Day ceremony to commemorate the life and legacy of Gen. Vessey—the only chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who began his military career as an enlisted man.
Hunt, who is stationed in Afghanistan, acknowledged her award via video message to attendees. Klein’s story and the event, livestreamed at ConnectingVets.com, will soon be available.
