UMGC Global Media Center Exhibit Celebrates The Transformative Power Of Art

“Order Out of Chaos,” the latest exhibit presented by the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Arts Program examines the works of artists who live and create in the supportive housing complex, Artists' Housing Incorporated (AHI) in Baltimore, Maryland. The show is guest curated by Baltimore artist Ruth Channing Middleman, painter, printmaker and wife of fellow artist Raoul Middleman.

The exhibition illustrates the profoundly transformative effect that occurs on the lives and works of artists—as well as the greater community—when they are able to live affordably in a creative, diverse and cooperative environment.

AHI opened in 1987 and over the years has housed all manner of artists: painters and poets, costume designers and filmmakers, dancers and musicians, writers, photographers, architects and arts administrators. Some of the artists who have made AHI their home and workplace offered their perspectives in a panel discussion during the exhibit’s opening reception held on Sunday, May 7.

More About Ruth Channing Her printmaking has been described as witty, erotic, allegorical, and often deals with women’s reaction to powerful men and the power of sex.

“I love the print medium,” Channing wrote in her biography. “It takes the image beyond what it would be as a drawing. It's more expressive. When you pull the print up off the press it's always exciting—you never know quite how it's going to turn out.”
