Deliver The Student Speech
Eligible graduates are encouraged to apply to deliver the student speech at Winter Commencement 2023. The speech is a UMGC tradition and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate your fellow graduates.
To qualify, you must have earned your degree in summer 2023 or have applied to receive it in fall 2023. You must also meet the following criteria:
Minimum cumulative GPA (as of October 15) of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.5 for graduate students
In good disciplinary standing (no record of academic integrity or code of conduct violations)
No overdue balances (must be current if on payment plan)
Student speakers will
Prepare a five-minute speech that will inspire, motivate, and encourage everyone viewing
Participate in prerecording speech revisions and coaching sessions the week of November 13.
Participate in the recording of the on-demand virtual commencement ceremony on November 20.
The selected speaker must be available to attend the recording during the week of November 20. If the selected speaker is not available, an alternate speaker will be chosen. The student speaker will also have the opportunity to meet university leaders and have access to complimentary photos. The student speaker will be featured on promotional materials including the university’s social media channels.
The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. eastern time on November 6, 2023.
Sing The National Anthem and UMGC Alma Mater
Eligible graduates are also invited to audition to perform the National Anthem and UMGC Alma Mater during the virtual ceremony. The selected singer will make a memorable contribution to commencement.
The selected singer must be available to attend the virtual commencement recording on November 20. If the selected singer is not available, an alternate singer will be chosen. The student singer will also have the opportunity to meet university leaders and have access to complimentary photos. The student singer will be featured on promotional materials including the university’s social media channels.
