At University of Maryland Global Campus, we want to make sure you have every opportunity to succeed. However, if you need to repeat a course, you should reach out to an advisor to discuss undergraduate course repeat guidelines, which can also be found in our catalog.
If you have already attempted a course three times and are seeking to attempt the course for a fourth time, you will need to complete the course repeat petition form below to seek permission.
Please note: On this page, we define the term "attempt" as enrollment in a course in which the student has received a grade. Officially withdrawing from a class and receiving a mark of 'W' is not counted as an attempt for repeat limits.
Course Repeat Checklist
To repeat a course after three attempts, take the following steps:
- Submit a course repeat petition form by the deadlines listed below. (The form link will only work for current UMGC undergraduate students.)
As part of the form, you will need to prepare a detailed personal statement (500-word max) and time management plan to demonstrate your commitment to passing the repeated course if permission is granted. Refer to 10 Tips for Time Management for suggestions. - Contact an academic advisor to discuss the information provided on the petition form. You will want to ask your advisor how repeating the course may affect your GPA, transcript notations, progress toward degree completion, and financial aid. At the conclusion of the meeting, the academic advisor will submit a recommendation to the appropriate school.

10 Tips for Time Management
In completing the course repeat petition form, you need to develop a detailed time management plan. This should take into account your courses, studying techniques, job, and other relevant factors.
Here are some short and simple pointers to help you develop your plan.
- Get to know your syllabus.
- Make a to-do list and prioritize your work.
- Use time management tools, such as a calendar or planner.
- Allow time to learn new technology.
- Limit distractions when you study, such as your email, phone, and TV.
- Communicate with your instructor in a timely manner.
- Involve family and friends in your education journey.
- Make time for yourself by taking breaks to recharge.
- Don't try to do it all at once.
- Evaluate your plan and be open to trying new strategies.
