On Friday, April 23, University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor Jay Perman announced that all eligible students, faculty, and staff who work or study on a Maryland campus this fall must be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Given UMGC's online presence and global footprint, this directive affects our community differently than it does individuals who attend classes on a residential campus.

  1. Students who study fully online will not be required to show proof of vaccination.
  2. Students on military bases—both stateside and overseas—will continue to follow the vaccination guidance of their local base commanders, consistent with U.S. Department of Defense guidelines.

The chancellor's decision was not made lightly, and we support it fully. His emphasis—like ours—is firmly on the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff, and we encourage everyone to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
