The Orkand Chair Distinguished Lecture Series is sponsored by University of Maryland Global Campus to promote research and scholarship at UMGC. The series features internationally acclaimed speakers in the fields of management, technology, or education who discuss trends and advancements in these areas.
Hosted at UMGC headquarters in Adelphi, Maryland, the series is open to the UMGC community and general public.
The Orkand Chair was established through an endowment from Donald S. Orkand, founder of the Orkand Corporation and former chair of UMGC's Board of Visitors, to advance research and scholarship at UMGC by bringing scholars of national repute to serve at the UMGC Graduate School.
Donald S. Orkand is a highly successful entrepreneur, having founded The Orkand Corporation in 1970 and more recently DC Ventures and Associates, which provides counsel to senior management in the areas of information technology mergers and acquisitions.
Through Orkand's leadership and his acumen in management and information technology, The Orkand Corporation grew from being a two-person firm into a thriving $85 million company, employing more than 1,100 staff members. The company's continuous growth in the dynamic and challenging world of information technology and government contracting made it particularly attractive and the company was acquired in July 2004 by a large, publicly traded corporation.
Orkand founded The Orkand Corporation to provide information systems and analytical services to a wide range of public and private sector clients, and he has been lauded for the company's success. Its clients were a "who's who" in government circles, including the U.S. Departments of Energy, State, Defense, Labor, Commerce, Interior, and the United States Postal Service, as well as the National Institutes of Health and many other public and private organizations.
Orkand has served on the University of Maryland Global Campus board, and in 2004, he established the Orkand Endowed Scholarships for The Undergraduate School and the Orkand Endowed Chair in Management and Technology at The Graduate School.
Before joining UMGC's Board of Visitors, he served on the Dean's Advisory Council of the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition, Orkand serves or has served on a number of business, professional, and academic governing bodies, including the board of the University of Maryland Foundation and Suburban Hospital.
Orkand earned a BS (graduating summa cum laude), an MBA, and a doctorate, all in statistics and economics, from New York University. He studied under world-renowned quality-enhancement guru W. Edwards Deming, his advisor for both his master's thesis and doctoral dissertation.
