With an online bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from University of Maryland Global Campus, you can help find solutions to global issues such as the SARS-COV-2 virus (COVID-19), food insecurity, and bioremediation. This program combines laboratory skills and applied coursework with a biotechnology internship experience and upper-level study. The curriculum, designed with input from employers, industry experts, and scholars, can prepare you for a career in multiple fields including pharmaceuticals, biomedical research, and more.

This program is designed to help you prepare to enter the pharmaceutical, agricultural, or biomedical research industries and organizations in the areas of laboratory technology, quality control, assay analysis, chemical technology, and bioinformatics.
We recommend a strong background in biology, chemistry, and math; an understanding of molecular biological techniques; and strong written and verbal communication skills.

To pursue a major in biotechnology, you must have completed the required lower-level coursework for the biotechnology major—within an Associate of Applied Science degree program at a community college with which UMGC has an articulation agreement, within another appropriate transfer program, or at UMGC. Consult an advisor before electing this major.
Coursework does not have to be completed prior to admission, but it must be completed prior to graduation. Transfer coursework must include general microbiology with a microbiology lab (4 credits), general genetics with a genetics lab (4 credits), and biotechnology applications and techniques with a lab (7 credits) chosen from the specific subject areas outlined in the Required Major Courses section.
This program does not have military restrictions. It is available to all eligible civilian and military-affiliated students.

The online bachelor’s degree program in laboratory management at University of Maryland Global Campus is the only one of its kind in the state of Maryland.
