Help preserve Joseph Sheppard's art and promote art research and experiential learning.

The Leroy Merritt Center for the Art of Joseph Sheppard preserves and promotes Sheppard’s beloved figurative art and provides students and the greater University of Maryland Global Campus community with an academic center for scholarly research and experiential learning.

The center’s library houses Sheppard’s collection of about 1,000 books about classical art and artists and his original figure and still life drawings and anatomical studies. It serves as a sanctuary for art students and established artists who want to master the tenets of classical art by exploring and recreating the human figure. The library is fully equipped to allow students to create their own artwork.

The adjacent sculpture and painting galleries provide students and visitors with a look into the creative process Sheppard employed to create his magnificent artworks.

Please consider offering your continued support for The Leroy Merritt Center for the Art of Joseph Sheppard and help us strengthen the legacies of Joseph Sheppard and Leroy Merritt. There are many ways to support the center:

  • The Leroy Merritt Endowed Fund will provide support in perpetuity for upkeep and maintenance of the center.
  • Naming opportunities range from $25,000 to $500,000 and allow donors to have their names prominently displayed in the center.

Donors who contribute more than $500 will be recognized on an exquisitely designed recognition plaque in the center. For more information on making a gift or pledge, please contact Institutional Advancement.
