Meet Our Business and Management Students and Alumni
Our business and management students are discovering the difference a UMGC business degree can make.

I've worked in several small businesses, but my ultimate goal was to work at a larger organization within a human resources department—something I wouldn't have been able to do without a degree. Just before I graduated, I was able to land that dream job at a prestigious community hospital.

UMGC is great for people who want to individualize their program. You get a taste of a lot of the topics in business, including marketing, accounting, financial math, and legal topics. The professors are people working in the real world, not just academics, and the students are people who are working too.

My classes helped me to master the language of finance and speak authoritatively in front of the institution’s business leadership.

I work in an accounting firm. And in order for me to advance, I needed my degree. Even though I had the work experience, I needed my degree. I recently went on a multibillion-dollar presentation for a firm…and I was invited to come along…. At the end of the [presentation], my partner came to me and said, 'That was awesome. You did great.' And I can only attribute it to the formal training that I received here.

So much of the human resources program…ties into real life on a daily basis. That’s part of the reason I like the field; it’s applicable. In my capstone course, there was a big focus on Centers for Excellence. As I came to [Anne Arundel Health System], we were putting it into play. It was really cool to tie the concepts I was learning in the course to real-world applications. I was witnessing something I had read in a book, and my organization was doing this.

We did a lot of marketing research and studied all the major companies. In one class, we even learned how the Grateful Dead and the NBA were marketed. This gave me a broad understanding of how business can become successful.
Debbie Murphy
Master of Business Administration

Ed and Natalie met in undergraduate school and started their family soon after. With full time jobs and two children, going to graduate school was a totally different experience. What motivated them? Knowing that what they could learn at UMGC would boost their careers.

When Deborah Bearor took on a project coordinator position, she impressed her colleagues with her relevant knowledge of the industry. The understanding that Deborah brought from her strategic management course at UMGC added value to the conversation and made her an indispensable member of her new team.

My education and background are in business. It's what I've always been interested in. I earned my real estate license with the hopes of one day opening my own real estate agency, so going back to school for my MBA was pretty much a no-brainer.
